From Molecules to the Human Body: The Biological Foundations of a Balanced Diet

On 22 October, Antonina Besiedina, Associate Professor at the Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology with a Course in Medical Biology, delivered a science outreach session for pupils of Municipal Institution “Lyceum No. 24” of the Sumy City Council, entitled “From Molecules to the Human Body: The Biological Foundations of a Balanced Diet.”

The aim of the event was to deepen pupils’ understanding of the biological foundations of healthy nutrition, the role of essential nutrients in maintaining the body’s vital functions, metabolism and energy conversion, and to foster a responsible and informed approach to personal health.

The session explored the importance of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals for the normal functioning of the human body, including how these nutrients are absorbed and participate in metabolic processes. Particular attention was paid to the principles of a balanced diet, the importance of dietary variety, and the prevention of health problems associated with poor nutrition.

The event helped promote contemporary biomedical knowledge, develop pupils’ scientific thinking, and improve their understanding of the relationship between nutrition, metabolism and health. The practical focus of the session highlighted the importance of applying scientific knowledge in everyday life and developing a responsible attitude towards personal well-being.

The event supported the objectives of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 – “Good Health and Well-Being,” which aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for people of all ages.

The session formed part of the Department’s science outreach and career guidance activities, designed to encourage school pupils to explore the biological foundations of health, promote biomedical knowledge, and foster an informed and responsible approach to a healthy lifestyle.
