our story

On March 1, 1993, responding to the invitation of the dean of the newly established medical faculty, Professor V.E. Markevich, Oleksandr Vasyliovych Ataman, who until then held the position of professor of the Department of Pathological Physiology of the Kyiv Medical Institute, came to Sumy. Acad. O.O. Bogomolets Painstaking work on the organization of the department, its personnel and material support has begun.

On August 16, 1993, this work culminated in the creation of the Department of Normal and Pathological Physiology at the then Sumy Institute of Physics and Technology (rector’s order N125-1 dated August 13, 1993).

The first employees of the department were Dr. honey. of Sciences O.V. Ataman (head), candidate. honey. of Science G.Yu. Pishnov, Ph.D. honey. of Science T.V. Korshniak, L.Yu. Litovchenko. The first candidate of sciences trained at the department was V.Yu. Garbuzova, who in 2004 successfully defended her dissertation in the specialized council of the Institute of Physiology named after O.O. Bogomolets National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Since 2001, the department has been training scientific and pedagogical personnel in postgraduate studies. The first graduate student was a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine R.F. Naumko (defended his thesis in 2005).

In 1999, in connection with the reorganization of the faculty structure, the course of microbiology and medical biology was added to the department (head – M.M. Kaplin), and since 2003 the course of medical biology remained in the department (head – O.Yu. Smirnov) . During the existence of this course, medical biology was taught by: prof. M.M. In 2011, the scientific laboratory of molecular genetic research (head – V.Yu. Garbuzova) began its work, which studies the connection of allelic polymorphism of many genes with the development of common pathological processes and diseases.
On December 18, 2021, Professor O.V. died suddenly. Ataman, which became an irreparable loss for the team.
