Flipped Learning for Active Learning in Physiology

Associate Professor Olha Obukhova of the Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology with a Course in Medical Biology at Sumy State University applies the Flipped Learning approach, combining students’ independent preparation with active participation during online classes.
Zoom provides opportunities for interactive learning: students work in teams in breakout rooms, prepare joint responses and presentations, and use collaborative online whiteboards to create diagrams and mind maps illustrating the relationships between physiological processes.
Students can study learning materials at their own pace and deepen their understanding of the topics during online sessions through interaction with their lecturer and fellow students.
This approach promotes accessibility and quality of education, even in distance learning environments, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to quality education and lifelong learning.
When presenting their work, future physicians explain the mechanisms of physiological processes, substantiate their conclusions, ask questions, and learn to find solutions collaboratively.
This learning format fosters independence, critical thinking, and teamwork skills, encouraging students to continuously develop and improve their knowledge.
