Meeting of the Sumy branch of the Society of Pathophysiologists

In May, a meeting of the Sumy branch of the Society of Pathophysiologists was held, which was attended by teachers of the department: Professor Viktoriia Harbuzova, Associate Professor Olga Obukhova, Associate Professor Antonina Biesiedina, Associate Professor Marina Demenko, Assistant Tatiana Oleshko, Assistant Zoya Levchenko, Assistant Elizaveta Stroy, Assistant Mykola Kirichenko.

Professor Viktoriia HARBUZOVA spoke about the main directions of the Society’s scientific work. The scientific activity of the Sumy Regional Society of Pathophysiologists is carried out in two directions.

  1. Experimental research: studying the mechanisms of dystrophic-sclerotic changes and calcification of arterial and venous vessels.

The following problems are studied within this area:

  1. Energy metabolism in blood vessels in normal and pathological conditions
  2. Pathophysiology of venous vessels
  3. Pathogenesis of Menkeberg’s arteriosclerosis
  4. Mechanisms of D-hypervitaminosis lesions of blood vessels
  5. Molecular genetic direction: study of the role of allelic polymorphism of genes in the development of pathological processes and diseases. The research is carried out on the basis of the scientific laboratory of molecular genetic research of Sumy State University.

The following issues are studied within this area:

  1. The role of ‘phosphorus-calcium metabolism genes’ polymorphism in the development of acute coronary syndrome, ischemic stroke, Menkeberg arteriosclerosis, and diabetes complications
  2. The relationship between the polymorphism of ‘endothelial dysfunction genes’ and the development of common cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases and tumour processes
  3. Influence of polymorphism of cytokine genes, cell receptors and intracellular mediators on the course and results of treatment of common human diseases.
  4. The role of polymorphism of long non-coding RNA genes in the pathogenesis of cancer (kidney cancer, bladder cancer, prostate cancer).

The Scientific Laboratory of Molecular Genetic Research provides a wide range of genomic techniques: analysis of gene expression, microRNAs, non-coding RNAs, SNP genotyping, study of gene copy number variations, mutation detection, DNA methylation, analysis of drug metabolism enzymes and protein expression, as well as polymerase chain reaction followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis (PCR-RFLP). Research topics are constantly being carried out on the basis of the scientific laboratory of molecular genetic research.

The members of the Society discussed the format of participation in the IX National Congress of the Scientific Society of Pathophysiologists of Ukraine, which will be held on 3-5 October 2024 at Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University.

Pathological physiology is the basis of medicine. And there can be no professional doctor without deep knowledge of the pathogenesis of diseases. Therefore, it is difficult to overestimate the importance of this science.
