On 24 September, the first organisational meeting of the Department’s Student Scientific Society was held online, marking an important step in the development of student research activities.
The scientific society brought together students from different years of study in the Medicine and Dentistry programmes, as well as pupils from Lyceums No. 33 and No. 24 of Sumy City Council (SMR), who are interested in exploring biological sciences in greater depth, acquiring practical skills and developing their own scientific ideas.
The society’s activities will focus on four main areas, each aligned with one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals — “Good Health and Well-being”:
– “Mental Health Club” — exploring current issues relating to mental and emotional well-being, investigating the factors that influence mental health, and fostering a culture of awareness and responsible attitudes towards mental well-being. (Supervisor: Professor Viktoriia HARBUZOVA)
– “Molecular Genetics Laboratory” — deepening knowledge of molecular biology and genetics, introducing students to modern research methods, and exploring the principles of designing and conducting molecular genetic experiments. (Supervisor: Associate Professor Olha OBUKHOVA)
– “Physiology Research Group” — investigating the principles underlying the functioning of the human body, the activities of its organs and systems, and the mechanisms involved in maintaining homeostasis. (Supervisor: Assistant Lecturer Zoia LEVCHENKO)
– “Young Biologists’ Workshop” — fostering an interest in biological and biomedical sciences, developing the ability to analyse scientific information and strengthening research competencies and practical skills, while promoting the natural sciences. (Supervisor: Associate Professor Antonina BIESIEDINA)
During the inaugural meeting, participants were introduced to the society’s main areas of activity, discussed organisational matters, agreed on the format of future meetings and identified promising topics for research projects.
