From April 1 to 4, the Second Biology School for students in grades 9–11 from the city of Sumy was held at the Educational and Scientific Institute of SumDU. The event, initiated by Professor Viktoriia HARBuzova, was organized and conducted by the Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology with the course of Medical Biology, with support from the Department of Pathological Anatomy.
As part of the school, four laboratories, four excursions, a genetics quiz, and a biology show were organized.
On the first day, students, together with Assistant Zoia LEVCHENKO, took part in the Neurobiology Laboratory. Together, they explored different types of memory capacity, the features of higher nervous activity, and types of temperament.
The second day of the Biology School unfolded in the engaging atmosphere of the Heredity Laboratory under the guidance of Associate Professor Olha OBUKHOVA. Participants had the opportunity to dive deeper into the world of genetics, examining theoretical questions, solving complex genetic problems, and tackling a themed crossword puzzle.
In the Chemical-Toxicological Laboratory, under the guidance of Assistant Tetiana OLESHKO, everyone had the chance to try themselves as an environmental inspector. Students analyzed drinking water, determined the concentration of chemical substances and pollutants, and explored the sanitary and epidemiological indicators of water, discovering a new level of responsibility for the environment.
On the final day of the event, participants were welcomed by the Biometric Research Laboratory, led by Associate Professor Antonina BIESEDINA. Here, students learned fascinating facts about fingerprints and even decoded their own fingerprint patterns.
An exciting excursion was organized for curious young biologists by the Ulab Laboratory and Associate Professor Yurii ZUBAN. Through virtual and augmented reality, high school students were able to visit a museum featuring famous exhibits from around the world, explore the human body from the inside, ascend a skyscraper, and control a drone.
Two thrilling excursions were led by Professor Roman MOSKALENKO and staff of the Department of Pathological Anatomy. These included a visit to the Museum of Pathological Anatomy—also known as the “Sumy Kunstkamera”—and the Scientific Center for Pathomorphological Research. Students saw diseased organs with their own eyes and took part in the preparation of histological slides.
SumDU’s University Clinic and its director, Iryna MOISEIENKO, also warmly welcomed the students. Participants visited the ReHab Rehabilitation Center, where those interested tried their hand at being rehabilitation specialists and worked with the center’s modern equipment.
At the official closing ceremony of the Second Biology School, the Director of the Educational and Scientific Medical Institute, Andrii LOBODA, presented certificates and awards to the young biologists and invited them to continue their education at SumDU’s Medical Institute. In addition, participants shared their impressions of the activities they attended during the school and expressed their gratitude to the organizers.
The Second Biology School has come to an end—but collaboration with talented youth continues!
We look forward to seeing you at our future events!
