Medical Biology
General Information
Medical biology is taught to students of the 1st course during 1st and 2nd semesters.
In the Medical Institute of Sumy State University, medical biology is taught students of specialties 222 "Medicine", 221 "Dentistry", and 228 "Pediatry".
REGULATIONS of educational process in the Medical biology discipline are described here.
Medical biology as an academic discipline:
a) is based on disciplines, which are previously studied by students in secondary school, such as "General Biology", "Human Biology", "Animal Biology", "Biology of Plants";
b) provides a high level of general biological training;
c) provides students a foundation for further assimilation of knowledge of relevant theoretical and practical clinical professional disciplines (medical chemistry, medical genetics, clinical immunology, infectious diseases with epidemiology, internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, etc.).
The knowledge, that students receive when study the academic discipline "Medical Biology", is the base for the courses that provide scientific and practical training.
The main components of the course are: cytogenetics, classical genetics, molecular genetics, medical genetics, population genetics and evolution, ecology. In the last component, important element is medical parasitology, where students study protozoology, helminthology, entomology, and arachnology.
The study of modern scientific data on the molecular and genetic mechanisms of life will allow students to understand where and why disruptions of normal biological processes arise and pathological changes develop. The study of various aspects of parasitology will help to learn the principles of diagnosis and prevention of parasitic diseases that are distributed worldwide.
